Does a Cut Bike Key Also Need a Chip?
Cutting shapes the blade so it turns the ignition, the seat lock and usually the fuel cap. On a machine with an immobiliser the chip inside the key also has to be coded or the engine will not fire.

Do I have to take the bike anywhere?

Is a cut key enough to start a modern bike?
Not if the model has an immobiliser. The blade will turn the ignition and unlock the seat, but the engine will crank and refuse to fire until the chip is coded to the bike. We do the cutting and the coding in the same appointment.
