How long does a car key fob battery last?
Typically two to four years. Proximity keys drain faster than button-only remotes because they wake up and talk to the car whenever they are near it.
Can I change a key fob battery myself?
On most cars, yes, and we will happily tell you so.
Prise the case open at the seam, note which way the old cell faces, fit the new one the same way up and click the case shut. The rule people break is inserting the cell upside down, so check the plus symbol.
Do I need to reprogram my remote after changing the battery?
Usually not. Most fobs remember their pairing indefinitely. If the remote comes back but behaves erratically, a resynchronisation sequence normally sorts it. If it stays dead with a known-good cell, it needs coding back to the vehicle.
Why does my remote only work right next to the car?
That is reduced transmit range, and a fading coin cell causes it far more often than anything else. Fit a fresh cell first. If the range is still poor, the transmitter or antenna inside the fob is failing.
My remote got wet. Is it worth saving?
Often, if you act fast. Remove the cell, leave the case open and have it looked at within a day or two, before corrosion spreads across the board.
What if a new battery does not fix it?
Then the fault sits in the fob electronics, the pairing or the car itself. We diagnose that on site before recommending any car remote replacement.
